How can i tell if a picture frame is gold gilded or paint?

this is an old picture frame, at least fifty years old, larger than average. Is there some kind of clue or test i could use without being to obvious...Don't want them to raise the price :) The print thats in the frame is ugly but they want $50.00 so I am basically buying the frame, which is gesso. Thanks for any tips!
